Yesterday, India’s election commission announced that the India will have general elections in April-May this year, starting from April 16. This was announced by CEC Gopalaswami at a press conference, also attended by Election Commissioners Navin B Chawla and S Y Quraishi. This time, around 714 million people are eligible to participate in the election process. The main contest will expected to be between the ruling Congress Party (UPA) and the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (NDA). The counting of ballots would begin on May 16 and after a few hours we will have the complete result. Also, elections to assemblies in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Sikkim and Orissa will be held simultaneously with the Lok Sabha polls.
The dates for the five-phase elections are April 16, April 23, April 30, May 7 and May 13. U.P and Jammu and Kashmir will vote in 5 phases, Bihar will have 4 phases while there will be 3 phases in Maharashtra and West Bengal. Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Madhya Pra-desh, Manipur, Orissa and Punjab will vote in 2 phases. While other 15 states and 7 Union Territories will have single-day poll.

- April 23 — 141 constituencies
- April 30 — 107 constituencies
- May 7 — 85 constituencies
- May 13 — 86 constituencies
