What is new in Gmail ?

gmail_features.jpgDo you want to test new features on Gmail ? I think your answer will be Yes. Now you can test new features of Google’s mail service with the help of Gmail labs. Gmail Labs allows you to try out experimental new features in Gmail and send feedback to Gmail team so that they can improve them. Through Gmail labs, Google has added several new features on Gmail like AIM, colored labels, group chat, and rich emoticons. But they can only work in the latest version of Gmail which is currently available for Internet Explorer 7 and Firefox 2. So you have to upgrade your browser (If you are using IE 6 or Firefox 1.x versions) to take advantage of these new features. These are some of the features which I love to use on Gmail.

  • New look and feel for iPhone browsers. To get to Gmail on your iPhone and get the full new Google experience, just go to google.com in your web browser, hit the Gmail tab and sign in. Google Apps users with custom domains can also use this new Gmail interface by visiting mail.google.com/a/yourdomain.com.
  • With Gmail, talk to your AIM friends using an integrated chat list right inside Gmail. Now you have the option to sign in to your AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) account to chat with your AIM buddies from Gmail. Your AIM buddies will populate your Contacts list, and are searchable just like your Google Talk contacts. Chatting with your AIM buddies is very easy, just click on a name in your chat list, and start chatting.
  • Organize your email with new colored labels. Just click the color swatch next to each label to assign a color.
  • Chat with multiple people without multiple windows with Gmail. Invite your friends to a group discussion. Group chatting is very simple, just click ‘Group chat’ from the ‘Options’ menu when chatting.
  • Introduction of new emoticons in Gmail. Type the appropriate combination of keys and press Enter or click the blue smiley-face button at the right of the text-entry field, then you will see a pop-up menu where you can choose from different emoticon sets, including circular, rectangular, or standard.
  • Free IMAP service. With the help of IMAP service, you can sync your inbox across devices instantly and automatically. Whether you read or write your email on your phone or on your desktop, changes you make to Gmail will be seen from anywhere you access your inbox.
  • View as slideshow. In Gmail, you can open PowerPoint attachments as slideshows, without having to download anything. Just click “View as slideshow” next to the .ppt attachment you want to preview. Since you can open .doc and .xls attachments with Google Docs and Spreadsheets too, there’s no need to leave your web browser to check out your Gmail attachments.
  • In Gmail, the attachment limit is 20 MB so you can easily share big files, photos, videos large presentations and other files which can’t be made smaller.
  • With Gmail you can easily get mail from other email accounts. Gmail can check for the mail you receive at your other email accounts having POP3 access enabled.. You can retrieve your mail (new and old) from up to five other email accounts and have them all in Gmail. Then you can even create a customized ‘From:’ address, which lets you send messages from Gmail, but have them look like they were sent from another one of your email accounts.
  • You can import contacts from Yahoo, Outlook, and others to Gmail in just a few clicks
  • You may have heard this famous saying, a picture’s worth a thousand words. Gmail also understands the power of photos. In Gmail, with contact pictures, you can pick ones for yourself, see which ones your friends have chosen, and set certain pictures to show up for specific people in your Gmail account. You can also send picture suggestions to your friends.
