In the wake of surging competition from Facebook and Twitter, Google has injected many social networking features into its popular web based email product Gmail. The search engine giant Google has launched a new product named Google Buzz that allows users to quickly share messages, web links and photos with their friends and colleagues directly within Gmail. This will give Gmail users a new enhanced experience while browsing the mails. The world’s top search engine wants to keep users busy with its variety of products to retain the top spot in world’s top websites rankings.
And that’s the reason why it unveiled a handful of new products designed to make the new social networking features best suited to mobile devices, like Smartphones based on Google’s Android operating system. Google Buzz replicates some of the key features of popular social networking wibsites like Twitter and Facebook, which has increasingly challenged Google for capitalizing the web surfers’ online time.
Going by the stats, Gmail is the third most popular Web based email service in the world, with nearly 180 million unique visitors in December, according to ComScore. Microsoft’s Windows Live Hotmail and Yahoo’s Mail are No. 1 and No. 2, with around 370 and 300 million unique visitors respectively. Google will also be launching a special mobile application for Buzz, as well as incorporating Buzz technology into the mobile versions of its various products.
In building a social network with the email product, Google is following the steps taken by Yahoo, which adopted a similar approach in efforts to keep up with Facebook.
Main Features of the Google Buzz are:
- No setup needed
- Share publicly or privately
- Gmail Inbox integration
- Photo friendly
- Connect sites you already use
- See updates in real time
