Aravind Adiga, winner of Booker Prize 2008

The-White-Tiger.jpgDo you know who is Aravind Adiga? Let me tell you. He is the author of “The White Tiger”. This is his debut novel for which he got the 2008 Booker Prize. He is the fifth Indian-born author to win the prize, after Salman Rushdie, V. S. Naipaul, Arundhati Roy and Kiran Desai. The novel is story of Balram who comes from a rural poor family. The novel highlights the contrast between India’s rise as a modern global economy and the life of the protagonist. Balram is the son of a rickshaw-puller. He could not finish his education due to poverty. He works in a teashop, breaking coals and wiping tables. He learns from his experiences in life. The streets of India provided him with all the education he needed. Then a rich man hires him as a chauffeur, and takes him to live in Delhi. In this city, he becomes aware of immense wealth and opportunity. Finally he realized that there is only one way through which he can become part of this glamorous new India. To more what happens next, read the novel. By the way see the speech of Aravind Adiga delivered in Booker’s prize ceremony.
