Miss Indiana Katie Stam has been crowned Miss America for the year 2009 in Las Vegas. She is a 22-year-old student at University of Indianapolis. Stam has future plans to work in television news. She began competing in pageants at age 15. After winning the Miss Duneland local title Stam competed in the Miss Indiana pageant for the first time, in June 2008, although she had previously competed in a few less notable pageants. At the conclusion of the final competition was crowned Miss Indiana. For her state talent she performed “Art is Calling Me”. Whereas, the first runner-up of this competition was Miss Georgia Chasity Hardman. The Miss America pageant is a long-standing competition which awards scholarships to young women from the 50 states plus the District of Columbia and the US Virgin Islands. The first-prize winner of the national pageant is awarded the title of “Miss America” for one year.
