Who is Cyrus Mistry?

cyrus mistry Cyrus Mistry, the younger son of Irish businessman Pallonji Mistry, will be the next chairman of Tata Group, Indian multinational conglomerate company. He has been appointed deputy chairman and chairman-designate of Tata Sons and he will work with Ratan Tata for one year and take over the full control in December 2012. Mistry graduated from the Imperial College, London with a BE in civil engineering and holds a master of science in management from the London Business School. He is also a fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers.

Apart from the Tata Group, he also serves as a director on the board of several other companies, including Shapoorji Pallonji & Co, Forbes Gokak, Afcons Infrastructure and United Motors (India).

Born on 4th July 1968, Cyrus is married to Rohika Chagla, the daughter of lawyer Iqbal Chagla. His sister, Aloo, is married to Noel Tata, the half-brother of Ratan Tata. His brother-in-law, Noel Tata, is the CEO of the retail arm of the Tata Group.

Cyrus Mistry has been a director of Tata Sons since September 1, 2006. He served as a Director of Tata Elxsi Limited, from September 24, 1990 to October 26, 2009 and was a Director of Tata Power Co. Ltd until September 18, 2006. Mr Mistry also serves as Senior Vice President of Production of DQ Entertainment Plc. He serves as Senior Vice President of Business Development and Technology at DQ Entertainment (International) Limited. He serves as Chairman of the Board of Shapoorji Pallonji Group and Afcons Infrastructure Limited.


Mr Mistry serves as Director of various companies including – Forvol International Services Ltd, Shapoorji Pallonji & Co. Ltd, Cyrus Investments Ltd, Shapoorji Pallonji Power Co. Ltd, Buildbazaar Technologies (India) Pvt Ltd, Sterling Investment Corporation Pvt. Ltd, Samalpatti Power Co. Pvt. Ltd, Shapoorji Pallonji & Co. (Rajkot) Pvt. Ltd, Shapoorji Pallonji Finance Ltd, Shapoorji Pallonji Infrastructure Capital Co. Ltd, Oman Shapoorji Construction Co. Ltd and Muscat Pallonji Shapoorji & Co. Pvt. Ltd. He is also a founder member of the Construction Federation of India. He is a trustee of the Breach Candy Hospital Trust, Mumbai. He is also on the board of Imperial College India Foundation.

He is also an avid golfer. Mistry is also known to be a foodie and his favourite holiday destination is Europe. Besides Mumbai, he owns houses in London and Pune.

On November 23, 2011, the Tata Sons released a communiqué:

The board of directors of Tata Sons at its meeting today appointed Cyrus P Mistry as Deputy Chairman. He will work with Ratan N Tata over the next year and take over from him when Mr Tata retires in December 2012. This is as per the unanimous recommendation of the selection committee. Endorsing the appointment, Mr Tata, Chairman of Tata Sons, said: “The appointment of Mr Cyrus P Mistry as Deputy Chairman of Tata Sons is a good and far-sighted choice. "He has been on the board of Tata Sons since August 2006 and I have been impressed with the quality and calibre of his participation, his astute observations and his humility. He is intelligent and qualified to take on the responsibility being offered and I will be committed to working with him over the next year to give him the exposure, the involvement and the operating experience to equip him to undertake the full responsibility of the group on my retirement.” Mr Mistry, currently managing director, Shapoorji Pallonji Group, has been a director of Tata Sons since August 2006. He is a graduate of civil engineering from Imperial College, London, and has a master of science in management from the London Business School.
