Tips for Happy and colorful Holi

happyholi.JPGThis weekend people are celebrating Holi, Good Friday, and Eid Milad-un-Nabi in different parts of the world. Holi is a popular, Hindu spring festival. It also called the Festival of Colors. On the first day, bonfires are lit at night to signify burning the demoness Holika, Hiranyakashipu’s sister. On the second day, known as Dhulhendi, people spend the day throwing colored powder and water at each other. The spring season, during which the weather changes, is believed to cause viral fever and cold. Thus, the playful throwing of the colored powders has a medicinal significance. The colors are traditionally made of Neem, Kumkum, Haldi, Bilva, and other medicinal herbs prescribed by ayurvedic doctors. A special drink called thandai is prepared, sometimes containing bhang (Cannabis sativa). Rangapanchami occurs a few days later on a Panchami (fifth day of the full moon), marking the end of festivities involving colors.

But these days Holi has become a rough festival with tradition of applying colors and paint to the guests and friends with or without their consent. Actually people think that any kind of rudeness is totally forgiven on this day but in my opinion such fun should be done under certain limits. This is the reason why I don’t like this festival much. I am giving you some tips for safe and happy holi.

  • It is very much obvious but let me say, Wear old and ragged clothes while playing holi as after holi, it is normally very difficult to reuse the Holi clothes Better to wear full-sleeved shirts full pants that cover your legs fully
  • Before playing Holi, apply a thick layer of coconut or any oil on your body and hair.
  • Better to avoid traveling on Dhuledi, the day of playing colors. If you are traveling or outside the home, keep the car windows tightly shut.
  • To save your teeth from hard-to-remove stains from colored dyes, wear dental caps while playing with colors.
  • Try to use natural home made colors. If natural colors are not possible, then buy better quality of colors from a reputed shop or vendor.

  • Use more red or pink colors which looks good and can easily taken off. Gaudy purple, green, yellow, orange have more harmful chemicals in them and should be avoided. Don’t use permanent dyes or paints.
  • If your skin is prone to allergies, avoid playing with gulal.
  • Cover your hair while playing holi. You can make use of hat or caps to protect your hair from being colored with hard-to-rinse dyes or paints.
  • If you have suffered an eye injury with a high-speed balloon while playing holi, visit an eye specialist immediately.

So friends, once again happy holi from Abhishek Kumar
