Why WordPress is better than TypePad ?

You may think that since I use wordpress for my blog, I am saying, wordpress is better than typepad. But dear readers I am not biased. The picture is clear. Wordpress is emerging as the most powerful tool for making a blog website. Even CNN’s new Political Ticker blog is using WordPress. As wordpress powered blog can be launched quickly (Remember installation of wordpress takes only 5 minutes) and serve millions of pageviews without any problem.

WordPress is free whereas you have to pay a good amount of money to typepad.com for using its services. One can download full version of WP for free from wordpress site. It requires you to have a web hosting server with php and mysql support. If you do not want to invest in web-server then you can use Wordpress.com for running a site like yourname.wordpress.com. But overall self-hosted wordpress blog is better. There are large number of free to download themes are available across the world wide web. In addition to free templates, wordpress is powered by a big number of free plugins. This is the reason why it is highly adaptable and has so many more options and features through available plugins. All these features are missing in typepad where everything is commercial.

In blogosphere about 95% of all comments are spam. On TypePad, spam is a very difficult to control, whereas wordpress is supported by Akismet plugin for handling spams. In my opinion, Akismet is the best automated spam killer. I also use this plugin for controlling spams on my site.

Let’s talk about coding of the site. TypePad’s blog is can be easily controlled without knowing any coding or programming. In case of wordpress, if you don’t know HTML or PHP then no problem but if you want to really customize your blog to a large extent then you should have some knowledge of these languages. However with wordpress 2.0+ editing and cutomization can be done without reading the code. Wordpress is not only very simple for any novice user, but also robust enough for any computer geek.

There is a comparison chart of differenet Blog softwares. You will find this chart useful for picking the right software for designing a blog website. This chart also suggests that wordpress is the best tool for making blog websites.

To summarize WordPress is best for the experienced, hard-core and geek blogger. Typepad is made for newbie bloggers with zero programming background. However latest version of wordpress are able to satisfy this class of bloggers also.

So here ends the discussion. This completes my century on abhisays as it’s my 100th article. Thanks to Matt and his team for providing bloggers with such a wonderful tool (WP) for displaying their thoughts and ideas on internet.
