india.jpgAccording the latest news from India Today magazine, every Indian will soon have one unique number. It will be just like social security numbers in USA. The Indian Government is preparing the plan for this biggest project of the world. Now all the Indian citizens will have UID-based smart cards with their personal details embedded in them. Even infants will have tag numbers, and will get smart cards in due course. The permanent identifiers will be place of birth, date of birth and name of parents. The headquarters for this mammoth project will be in Delhi with offices in all states and Union Territories.

According to the Eleventh Five Year Plan document,

“The long- term objective of the UID Project is to create a core database for all residents, each having a unique identification number, which is regularly updated and is easily accessible to, and is used by all departments for identification of residents in the country.”

This would definitely be a great move from Indian Government as it will help address security concerns and check identity related fraud and flow of illegal immigrants.
