Facebook overtakes Orkut in India

FacebookAccording to the latest report by research firm comScore, Facebook has overtaken its competitors like Orkut and Yahoo in India to become the largest social networking site with more than 20 million visitors in July this year. Facebook registered a growth of 179 per cent whil Orkut is lagging behind at a growth rate of only 16 per cent. Currently, India is the seventh largest market worldwide for social networking, after the US, China, Germany, Russia, Brazil and the UK. The total Indian social networking audience grew 43 percent in the past year, more than tripling the rate of growth of the total Internet audience in India. India along with Brazil were the two markets that were dominated by Orkut when it came to social networking services.

“The social networking phenomenon continues to gain steam worldwide, and India represents one of the fastest growing markets at the moment,” comScore Executive Vice President (Asia-Pacific) Will Hodgman said.
