The Indian External Affairs Ministry website was hacked earlier this week by some chinese hackers but there is no report of any leakage of classified information. After detecting the IP addresses of the hackers, ministry officials have confirmed that the hackers were from China. However hackers from Sweden and other European countries have also tried to break into many of the MEA secure sites. According to the concerned Officials, this has been happening for some time now but clarified that the hackers did not have access to the systems where top-secret information is stored. Now the Indian government is taking all precautions and some audit teams will now regularly visit Indian missions abroad for inspection to prevent such hack attempts in future.
Indian officials are still not willing to confirm whether or not the hackers were working for Chinese government agencies or were part of the Chinese military intelligence or just doing it for fun and time pass. But this matter has been taken seriously and instructions have been sent to all missions to taker necessary precautions.
But the Indian government should learn from this hacking, it is very important that all computer systems be updated regularly to keep them safe from hackers. The ministry should have a fool-proof software and information system to protect key data. The Indian government will have to take serious steps in this direction to improve the computer and information systems defenses and fortify the system to defeat such hacking attempts.
