Sania-Bhupathi win mixed doubles

Sania_Bhupathi.jpgSania Mirza and Mahesh Bhupathi have won the mixed doubles title at the Australian Open, beating Nathalie Dechy (France and Andy Ram (Israel) 6-3, 6-1 in the final in Melbourne on Sunday afternoon. This win would be very important for Mahesh Bhupathi, especially after his defeat in the men’s doubles final with his double’s partner Knowles. He is a top Indian tennis player who has won many international tennis tournaments. 1999 was a golden year for Mahesh when he won three doubles titles with Leander Paes including French Open and Wimbledon. He and Leander became the first doubles team to reach finals of all four Grand Slams, since 1952.

This win is 11th Grand Slam title for Mahesh Bhupathi However this is first grand slam title for Sania Mirza. It is the first time an Indian pair has won the mixed doubles title at a Grand Slam event. Yesterday, Yuki Bhambri created history after becoming the first Indian to win the Australian Open boys singles title. He is the only Indian to win a Junior Australian Open.

“It took a few minutes to believe (that I have won my first Grand Slam title). It’s great to be a Grand Slam winner. I am at the airport and enjoying the moment. It’s a dream come true,” Sania told PTI from Melbourne as she prepared to flying home back.

I must say, Indian tennis is definitely having a good time. By the way congrats to Sania, Mahesh and Yuki for wonderful tennis. Hope they continue their winning momentum in coming matches.
