If you want to increase traffic on your site then your site must have higher positions in search engines, especially in Google, Yahoo & MSN. My blog abhisays.com has become one week old and acquired good positions (within top 20 search results) in Google for some keywords relevant to this site. How it happened ? It happened due to Search Engine Optimization that I did for this site. Since I am using word-press for this blog, I made changes in its default settings and used some of the famous plugins for seo of wordpress. Also, I am trying to create a good number of backlinks of this website on world wide web through various methods.
First of all lets us talk about permanent links in wordpress blog, Permalinks are the permanent links to your blog posts and by default Wordpress sets them by default to something like this: abhisays.com/?p=12 . I made it more readable by changing it to http://abhisays.com/internet/orkut-should-be-banned.html
Actually both point to the same page only the way of representation of URLs is different. This is very necessary due to these reasons………
- They are easily indexable by most of the search engines of the world.
- It also gives the search engine about the content of the post.
- Readers can also predict the nature of post and its content by just reading the URL.
This can be done by simply entering the tags /%category%/%postname%.html in the Custom field in Options -> Permalinks.
The PageTitle is also very important from search engine point of view. Search engines uses your Page Title as the linking text in its search engine results page (SERP). The search keywords are bolded for page titles in search engines. It makes it easier for search engine users to know right away if what they are looking for is correct
By default, Wordpress sets your page title to be like this:
“BlogName » Blog Archive » Post Title” Now, this will involve editing template files called “header.php”. Find this:
<title><?php bloginfo(‘name’); ?> <?php if ( is_single() ) { ?> Blog Archive <?php } ?> <?php wp_title(); ?></title>
and replace with:
<title><?php wp_title(‘ ‘); ?><?php if(wp_title(‘ ‘, false)) { echo ‘–’; } ?><?php bloginfo(‘name’); ?></title>
Other SEO issues for Wordpress blog will involve plugins for wordpress.

The most imp is offpage optimisation!
