Two giant research organizations are a step away from getting a project underway to design the internet from scratch. They feel that the current internet architecture has too many flaws and the only way to address the loopholes and security issues would be to design in right from scratch. Internet was started in 1969 and has faces many challenges ever since. BBN Technology is planning and designing a network called The GENI (Global Environment for Network Innovations), a network on which the researchers would be able to test their innovations without causing any disruption in the current Internet architecture; the teams have already been granted a $12 millions for their research to develop GINI.
For testing, Internet2 has promised to provide 10gigabits / second of dedicated bandwidth. Another 30gigabits / second of capacity would be provided by National Lambda Rail. Construction on GENI could start in about five years and cost $350 million. Congress still has to approve those funds. Is spending so much of money worth the gain ? Share your thoughts.
