Social networking is now more popular than email

Social-Networking.JPGAccording to latest report released by Neilson online, social networking and blogging web sites account for almost ten percent of time spent on the internet which is even more than on email. Nielsen Online, a service of The Nielsen Company, provides measurement and analysis of online audiences, advertising, video, consumer-generated media, word of mouth, commerce and consumer behavior. The report says, 1 in every 11 minutes spent online globally is on social networking sites. Between December 2007 and December 2008, the time spent on the sites has increased to 45 billion minutes. Now a days, Facebook has become the most popular networking site globally, with 108.3 million unique visitors. Other sites like MySpace, Orkut, Hi5 have also good penetration in the online market.

So the top five activities done on internet are ::

  1. Using search engine — 85.9 %
  2. General interest portals and communities for example Yahoo, Rediff etc — 85.2 %
  3. Software websites — 73.4 %
  4. Social networking and blogs — 66.8 %
  5. Email — 65.1 %
