Topix.net bought its .com

Topix.net is a news aggregator which categorizes news stories by topic and geography. It was created by the founders of the Open Directory Project. In March 2005, the Knight Ridder, Tribune Company and Gannett media companies purchased a 75% share of the company. Its CEO is Rich Skrenta. Recently It has bought its .com domain after paying a Canadian company $1 million so as to shift its site to .com. But here comes a big problem for topx.net.

The change from .net to .com will affect its google rankings in a big way. About 50% users come on topix through search engines in which google percentage is about 90.  It has 10 million visitors per month.  There are chances of 10 % loss in revenue after this shift. Meanwhile Topix is running both Topix.net and Topix.com in order to get over any unpredictabilities in Google and other search engines.
In my opinion, Google should have a better way to help sites who undergo domain change and the search results that get affected as a result. This news has once again proved that .com is still very important in internet world far ahead of .net, .org etc…
