YouTube, Bollywood Hindi Movies and copyright issues

bollywood_youtube.jpgToday, YouTube is fastest growing website in the world. It has changed the way videos are embedded on web pages. Within three years of its launch, it has become world’s number 2 website (according to Alexa traffic ranking). It has become big repository of TV shows, music videos, music concerts, sports events and commercials. YouTube has been criticized frequently for failing to ensure that its online content adheres to the law of copyright. There are millions of unauthorized clips from television shows, films and music videos on YouTube. YouTube administrators do not view videos before they are posted online, and it is left to copyright holders to issue a takedown notice under the terms of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. Some organizations like Viacom and the English Premier League have issued lawsuits against YouTube, claiming that it has done too little to prevent the uploading of copyrighted material.

Even Viacom demanded $1 billion in damages, said that it had found more than 150,000 unauthorized clips of its material on YouTube that had been viewed around 1.5 billion times. However YouTube officials have claimed that they have introduced a system of digital fingerprints that checks uploaded videos against the original content as a means of reducing copyright violation but I don’t think it is working fine for curbing video piracy on YouTube.

Let me share with you the funniest joke on internet. At the time of uploading a video, YouTube users are shown this message

“Do not upload any TV shows, music videos, music concerts or commercials without permission unless they consist entirely of content you created yourself. The Copyright Tips page and the Community Guidelines can help you determine whether your video infringes someone else’s copyright.”

But no one cares about this instruction and believe me more than 80 % videos on YouTube come under this category. Let’s talk about the hindi movies on YouTube. I have watched around 200 movies on YouTube due to my broadband internet connection. Normally users copy the movie from original VCDs or DVDs, split the 2 and half hours movie into 12-15 small video clips and then upload on YouTube. This is a small list of hindi movies on YouTube.

This aim behind posting this list is to show the Indian film makers that the right time has come to take action against this illegal uploading and hostingĀ of hindi movies on YouTube, otherwise this will cause a big loss in the form of revenue for them.
