Twitter, Tharoor and the Great Indian Politics

Shashi TharoorShashi Tharoor, the Indian Minister of State for External Affairs and a member parlimanet is in big controversy due to his post on Twitter regarding the people traveling in economy class. So the three musketeers, Twitter, Tharoor and the great Indian Politics are in news due to wrong reasons. Before joining Indian Politics, he was the UN Under-Secretary General for Communications and Public Information between June 2002 and February 2007, during the term of Secretary-General Kofi Annan at the United Nations. In 2006, he was the official candidate of India for the office of United Nations Secretary-General, and came second out of seven official candidates in the race. He is also well-known author with some of the best-selling books against his name. Earlier this month he was accused for staying in luxurious 5-star hotel in Delhi. However, he denied this by saying that he spent from his own hard-earned income as the UN Official. A few days back, he taunted the Congress’ austerity campaign through his twitter account.

Actually what happened, he described the economy class of airlines – a coveted place in the recent austerity spree of the Congress – as “cattle class” and publicly announcing that he will continue to travel in the ‘cattle class’ out of solidarity with “holy cows”. He replied to the question, whether he would continue to travel in economy (cattle) class or not. Many top Congress leaders are annoyed with Tharoor tweeting on twitter with his anti-Congress comments. One Congress Spokesperson said that the Congress High command is not happy with the latest tweet as thousands of people travel in economy class.

The Congress Party is also embarrassed with Tharoor speaking about showing solidarity with “holy cows” at a time when both Sonia and Rahul Gandhi are spearheading the austerity campaign and travelling in less expensive class in train and flights. I also feel that being such an important minister in Central Government he should try to avoid such condemnable and unfortunate remarks. However according to some of the newspapers Shashi Tharoor has already “tweeted” his apology around midnight on Thursday night to all those hurt by his “cattle class” remark.
