Importance of Hobbies in a resume ?

Hobbies_Resume.jpgAs you know I am working a big multinational software company. I got this job when I was in final year of my college. For getting this job, I cleared three rounds. The first two rounds where written (which consists of technical and aptitude questions) and technical interview. After clearing these two rounds, I appeared in HR interview. In the HR interview, the interviewer asked me for my resume. My resume was full of technical projects, software skills I know and extra-curricular activities that I did in school and college. But in the resume what attracted his attention is my hobby called blogging. The whole HR interview was diverted to blogging. How I started, Who is my role model in blogging, How much money I earn from this etc. That day I learned about the importance of hobbies in a professional resume.

Today I will discuss how inclusion of hobbies in your resume may benefit your career. Normally, most of the people include irrelevant information (which do not impact on the role being applied for) in their resume. I always recommend to add hobbies and interests in the resume.

Hobbies and interests should be selected in such a ways that it supports your career goals and objectives and and your role in the job you applied. For instance if you are applying for a role of a Team Leader, and you are captain of a local cricket club. Then believe me, adding this information in your resume will definitely enhance your chances of grabbing the new job. These day we find a great number of job opportunities in software field so hobbies such as reading novels, writing poems, Internet surfing and chatting may help in you getting jobs in computer companies.

One more thing, never add fake hobbies choose only those hobbies that emphasize your compatibility with a particular job description. Focus on your hobbies that you love and try to translate your hobbies into your job. For example, if your hobby is blogging, try to get a job in newspapers or magazines. Always remember, hobbies are a great source of inspiration and a big platform where you can start your journey for a successful career.
