GPS has been around for a very long time, but of late we have been seeing various cellular companies providing an inbuilt GPS. The way GPS works in a cell phone is that it locates the strongest cell signals visible by the device’s antenna, enabling it to determine its position accurately within 200 meters. There are several cool features now available with the GPS. Apart from the basic road map and your current location, you can find details about tourist attraction, restaurants, and other local information such as weather, traffic and news.
Several cellular companies like Samsung and Nokia and Apple’s new IPhone 3g offer more flexible services like dynamic maps. Also many GPS based games have also come into the market. Soon we might also see the addition of GPS being using to send ads on the cell phones. Social networking using GPS is also not behind. One such company is Loopt. In Japan, Honda provides service to download the local crime figures within a specific area, enabling the customer to decide that the area is good for parking or not. In Australia, in July the country’s fourth “natural burial site,” featuring biodegradable coffins that can be buried deep in the outback at a spot personally chosen by family members and precisely located by its GPS coordinates.
