Internet giant Yahoo has launched a new service called Meme which exactly works like Twitter. It says “Found cool things online? Send it to your Meme. It’s quick, simple and whole lot of fun. Coming soon.” Right now, Yahoo Meme is not open for general internet users. However, the homepage of Meme has a text box where you can submit your email address so that Yahoo can contact you in future for creating your Meme account. Yahoo Meme’s mascot is a dog unlike Twitter which has bird as mascot. The keyword “meme” was actually created by Richard Dawkins in his book “The Selfish Gene,” 1976. Dawkins and his team identified the meme as a fragment of culture or behavior which is replicated from brain to brain, in a way that is similar to what happens with genes in biology.
Yahoo used this term because it is free adaptation which has been expanded from its scientific meaning, while not diverging from the essence of the idea. It is cent percent similar to Twitter. After creating your username it will ask you for a description of min. 100 characters. Like Twitter, here also you can search for existing userse, follow, write upto 140 characters messages, include external links etc.
From last a few years, Yahoo is trying to copy the popular websites and trends on internet. Last year it launched Yahoo Buzz. It was Digg’s clone. I don’t think cloning popular web sites and launching them will benefit Yahoo in long run, rather what I feel, Yahoo should come up with some really new innovative ideas, otherwise, it would be very difficult for Yahoo to protect its identity on internet.
What do you think, Will Meme do anything good for Yahoo? Post your comments.
