Cell phone buying guide

cellphone.jpgMy sister today asked me “I would like to buy a new cell phone. But I am really confused. Which one should I go for?” With all the new cell phones in the market, it’s really quite a tough decision when it comes to deciding which handset one should go for. There are several categories of mobile phones, from basic phones to feature phones such as music phones and camera phones, to smart phones. Nokia is currently the world’s largest manufacturer of mobile phones, with a global share of approximately 40% in 2008. Other manufacturers include Samsung (14%), Motorola (14%), Sony Ericsson (9%) and LG (7%).

They together account for over 80% of all mobile phones sold in most countries.

What should one look for in a handset as a bare minimum necessity?

  • Built in camera
  • FM Radio
  • Bluetooth
  • USB connector to transfer files to your PC
  • Music Player
  • An above average stand by time

Common FAQ’s.

Why do I need a built in camera?
A cell phone with a 5 mega pixel is a no match for any digital camera with same resolution. That’s because the sensor placed in cell phones are much smaller. Yet it helps in moments when you are not carrying a camera.
Why do I need FM Radio?
Most people do not have the time to keep uploading the latest music to their handsets. Others don’t have a PC ready available with them at all times.
Why do I need Bluetooth?
Helps transfer of files from one mobile to the other without needing to physically connect the two handsets.

Apart from these here are some of the additional features one could look for. These would only be necessary in case you are a frequent traveler and use of your cell phones extensively.

WIFI – WIFI enabled handsets help you to connect to the internet.
3G enabled handsets – Check this if you wish to use your handsets all across the globe, across all networks. Additional Applications like Instant Messenger, built in browser, Calendar, Mailbox etc.
Tips : Look for the accessories the manufacturer has to offer. One charger, headphones is an absolute must.

Wifi spots are not so common, even as of today, apart from few developed countries. So, I think, one can just let off with the Wifi connectivity, considering the current market trend, for 3G networks.
