How to make a social bookmarking website?

in: Tips and Tricks

Pligg, originally named mename in Spanish, is a web application that allows you to submit an article that will be reviewed by all and will be promoted, based on popularity, to the main page. When a user submits a news article it will be placed in the “unpublished” area until it gains sufficient votes to be promoted to the main page. The original source for Pligg was authored by Ricardo Galli. He was influenced by the extremely popular English technology site digg.com.Thus Pligg will be the best choice, if you planning to launch a social bookmarking website like Digg, netscape, reddit etc.

According to Eric Heikkinen ( Pligg Web Director ) “Pligg is unique compared to most other content management systems because of its flexibility. A web designer can do pretty much anything with Pligg because the software was designed to be used in as many ways as possible. Not only can a person with very little knowledge of PHP and MySQL install it, but they can modify and administer it with relatively little difficulty. For those who have a greater understanding of web languages, Pligg can act as the first step in a highly customized personal content management system.”

Pligg requires that your server has installed a recent version of PHP and MySQL. You must be able to access a MySQL database for storing data, if you don’t know how or if your web host offers MySQL access please contact your host for details. Latest Pligg Beta 9 doesn’t work properly on PHP 4.4.2

Live Demo: http://demo.pligg.com/

You have to follow these steps to install pligg cms in your web server.

1. Create a mysql database. Example “pligg.”
Note – Have your database name, username, password, and
host handy before installing

2. Rename settings.php.default to settings.php. Do the same
for /libs/dbconnect.php.default.

3. Upload the files to your server.

4. chmod 777

/avatars/user_uploaded
/backup
/cache
/rss/templates_c
/templates
/templates_c

5. chmod 666

/libs/dbconnect.php
/libs/lang.conf
/libs/options.php
settings.php
6. chmod 655

config.php

7. Open yoursite.com/install in your web browser.
Step 1: Make sure to read the entire page and click continue
at the bottom when finished
Step 2: Fill out your database name, username, password, host,
and your desired table prefix.
Step 3: Make sure there are no error messages!

8. Delete your /install folder.

9. chmod 644 libs/dbconnect.php

10. Open yoursite.com

11. Use the god account. Login: god – Password: 12345 to make the changes needed.

12. Change the password from 12345 to something different as soon as possible.

Now To change your Pligg site name which reads Pligg Beta 9 by default, open libs\lang.conf and change the value of PLIGG_Visual_Name. While there, also change the value of PLIGG_Visual_What_Is_Pligg and PLIGG_Visual_What_Is_Pligg_Text. Save and close lang.conf.

I have been browsing online more than 3 hours these days,
yet I by no means discovered any fascinating article like yours.
It’s beautiful value sufficient for me. Personally, if all web owners and bloggers made good content as you probably did, the internet will probably be much more helpful than ever before.
