It is possible to launch a news portal or magazine type of website by using wordpress. Max Limpag has written an interesting article about modifying WordPress to run a magazine-style website, with distinct sections for different subjects, as an alternative to a linear chronological weblog. We can also use joomla or drupal to run a new website but I believe that WordPress is much easier to manage.
