Who is the world’s fastest bowler in history of Cricket?

in: Hot Shot

Shoaib-Akhtar.JPGDo you know who is the fastest bowler in history of world Cricket? Recently I have tried to find the answer of this question on internet. I saw several videos, read the achieves of various new papers and magazines and finally got the information that Jeff Thomson and Shoaib Akhtar are considered as the world’s fastest bowlers. Competing in a 1978 fast bowling contest that included many of the leading bowlers in the world, Thomson came first with a delivery clocked at 147.9 km/h, ahead of Michael Holding (141.3 km/h) and Imran Khan (139.7 km/h). In 1975 during a test match, he was timed using high-speed cameras at 160.45 km/h and then the following year he was timed at 160.58 km/h using conventional radar. Australian wicket-keeper Rod Marsh kept wicket to Thomson for most of his Test career and claimed that Thomson bowled upto speed of 180 km/h which is much greater than the present recorded speed on bowling of Shoaib Akhtar. But there is no recorded proof of Thomson bowling at the speed of 180 km/h.

Shoaib, also known as Rawalpindi Express, set a world record by delivering a ball with speed more than 100mph (160 km/h) twice. I will never forget his first encounter with Sachin Tendulkar in which Shoaib bowled him for the first ball he delivered to Sachin. His contemporary Brett Lee also made new records in fast bowling with deliveries upto speed of 157.4 km/h.

    Hello to all of you..
Fact is Fact Shoaib is the fastest bowler of the world. If we say in the past Thomson was the fastest bowler, so my friend that time there was no advance technology to calculate the exact speed of the bowler. But now every thing is cleared and we have good technology and speed calculation machine. every body has its own favorite bowler but we have to learn to accept the truth that is called Bravery. I hope u understood what I meant? Fastest bowler of the world is Shoaib (Honey) then LEE and so on so on…

one more thing there was a time every batsman of the world they used to afraid to face the fire of shoaib. For example Sachin, ganguly, Dravid and more and more…
Did you forget when shoaib hit ganguly and he laid down on the earth, he was behaving like he was shot by bullet (Very Well Done Shoaib honey) and Lara also…
Nobody can face the fire of shoaib honey this is the truth………………. and try to accept the truth.

In the old days speed was measured differently so on paper there are many faster than Thommo but it is claimed that due to the different method he was clocked at a slower speed although he was quicker.
I can`t confirm this but it has been said that these days bowlers are clocked as the ball leaves the had whereas before it was clocked as it reached the other end of the pitch.

So Aussie, so stupid!! Rod Marsh may be a good wicket keeper but certainly he could not measure the speed of ballsthat came to him just by catchig (or missing) them. If he was a traffic policeman, it would be a nightmare for Aussies, he could tell you without using a camera, that you drove at 310 mph. Thompson but had that Shaun Tait action and he may have bowled close to 98 mph. Yet today’s bowlers are quicker than him.

    2. Shaun Tait 160.7 (km/h)

It is said that Jeff Thomson’s speed of the ball was measured at the batsman end!! It surely would have been around 170/160kmph if it was measured when he released the ball!!

I ve seen Akthar, Sami, Lee, Tait, Lilee, Marshall, Andy Roberts, Ambrose, Mohamaad Zayed but BELIEVE ME Thomson was something extra!!

P.S. I forgot to mention the part that he was fastest between 1972-1976. He injured himself colliding with a fellow fielder and lost quite a bit of pace!!

AND THE MOST AMAZING THING WAS HE ONCE BOWLED A BOUNCER THAT WENT FOR SIX BYES!! THE BALL DIDN NOT BOUNCE A SINGLE TIME BEFORE REACHING THE BOUNDRY!! I cant see anyone else do that!! Its like Usain Bolt I guess!! That guy runs 100 metres at 9.56 or something!!! If we hadn seen that, we never would have believed he used to run THAT quick!!

The fastest bowler ever was Patrick Patterson of the West Indies using a police radar car in th ecity of Port Elizabeth, South Africa he was clocked at 106mph.

Colin Croft and Malcom Marshall have both been recorded at over 96mph but the machine did not record above 98mph for some reason.

Jeff Thomson and Rodney Hogg were quicker than any Aussie bowler today.

I have seen many bowlers over the last 35 – 40 years and by far the fastest bowler was Jeff Thomson. As one other person mentioned, Thomson lost some of his pace due to injury. When Thomson was at his fastest, technology didn’t exist to measure his speed. It was only late in his career he was officially measured.

Often apples are compared with pears on this question.
Speeds often quoted for Jeff Thomson were recorded as
the speed arriving at the batsman’s end (by high speed camera).
Speeds given for Shoab Akhtar/Brett Lee and others in more modern times are speeds out of the bowlers hand as measured from the batsman’s end (by radar gun). One metre after delivery a ball has decreased speed by around 0.97 km/hr.

Radar measured speeds (such as on ODI TV broadcasts) are not particularly accurate. This is due to the fact (1) the ball is not travelling directly at the radar, (2) is slowing through the air, and (3) rotating in the air (presenting different seam profile). High speed frame cameras give a much more accurate speed reading (such as the camera that captured JT’s ball in 1975).
If Jeff Thomson can put a ball at the batsman’s feet currently travelling at over 160km/hr, it suggests it has been released from the hand at something like 180km/hr …. which is a much higher speed than anything Shoab Akhtar/Brett Lee have ever come remotely close to.

lee has the most consistent speed thats y he is at the top. tait has a brilliant pace and his top is 160.7 kmh . akhtar shud nt be included in the list cuz he took stamina injections several times before bowling and sami has never bowled above 152.30 kmh. 162 ks for sami was just a mistake and brett lee is the most stormy bowler in the history of world cricket

anugrha shukla on December 24th, 2011
  • 61

According to my view,,,,,shoaib akhtar is a legend with a top speed of 161.3km\h which he delivered against England’s nick knight….He could ball at a average speed of 140km\h….Brett lee tried to overcome the maximum speed of Shoaib but could ball the top speed of just 159km\h and now Shaun Tait is the fastest bowler in modern cricket after the retirement of Shoaib akhtar with the top speed of 160.7km\h……but unfortunately India couldn’t produce a fast bowlers like Brett lee,Shaun Tait and shoaib,,only Ishant sharma has bowled at a maximum speed of 150km\h against Australia……
