Doordarshan is the public television broadcaster of India and a division of Prasar Bharati, which is a Government of India enterprise. Still in this world of huge competition among differnet TV, Doordarshan is one of the largest broadcasting organizations in the world in terms of the infrastructure of studios and transmitters. In India, Doordarshan is the number one TV channel. Now a days it is not so popular in urban areas but its old serials are still some of hot search items on internet. The 80s was the era of Doordarshan when it became integral part of living room of middle class in India with popular shows like Hum Log (1984), Buniyaad (1986-87) and comedy shows like Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi (1984). The first ever daily soap Hum Log, Buniyaad and Nukkad and mythological dramas like Ramayan (1987-88) and Mahabharat (1989-90), Shaktimaan, India’s First Superhero, attracted millions of Indians to Doordarshan. There were some historical serials like Bharat Ek Khoj, The Sword of Tipu Sultan and The Great Maratha, which also appealed a large section of viewers.

- Crime thrillers — Jasoos Karamchand (starring Pankaj Kapoor), Super six, Barrister Roy (starring Kanwaljeet), Byomkesh Bakshi (starring Rajit Kapoor), Reporter (Shekhar Suman’s first apperance on TV), Tehkikaat and Suraag (starring Sudesh Berry).
- Shows targeted at children include Fairy tale Theatre, Dada Dadi ki Kahaniyan, Vikram Betaal, Sigma, Stone Boy, Malgudi Days, Tenali Rama, Potli Baba Ki, Superhuman Samurai Cyber Squad, Knight Rider, Street Hawk and a horror serial Kile ka Rahasya (1989).

My family had actually recorded about 6 episodes of “Wagke ki Duniya” on VHS. I even had the one with Shahrukh Khan…remember he stars as a brat who accidentally runs into Mr. Wagle and both of them spend a harrowing two days waiting to lodge a complaint at the cops. I remember thinking then …this guy is so cute…he shhould act in movies…well…he did. Those shows were so much better than the “saas bahu” nonsense thats dished out.

Doordarshan days were amazing,specially the introduction of DD Metro in 90’s was mindblowing,it came with T.V. serials of standards matching metropolitan tastes in all genres also it was in digital mode and with Indipop trend coming in with videos of Shaan,Alisha,Sarika,Suchitra and many more it made the feel of watching the channel more energetic.
Do you remember in 1999 there was a mega event hosted in Delhi dedicated to India-Lahore bus service and it came on DD,could you please tell where do get that from,maybe this will make you remember,it was hosted by Javed Jafferi and it had performances by Om Puri,Junoon,Mohit Chauhan and his band-Strings and many more

I think all of you who want old DD serials on DVD’s you can contact DD KENDRA’s in your city ..they have a section called DORDARSHAN ARCHIVES where old telecasted programes are available , im not sure if they have tv serials available with , some of the tv programs were broadcasted from DD MUMBAI they might have video tapes with them contact DD KENDRAS or write a mail to suggest them to make available old tv serials on DVD/CD..for purchase ty

Well i was watching bigg boss finale today and suddenly felt wat are we watching these days really . The real content is missing seems every thing is just plastic its fake. Do we have anything which we can recall from our past 5 years .No but we have had such a good entertainment 15 20 years back. Still remember the characters and who played what role and atleast they had a recall value on our minds. Most of the time is spent in just surfing the channels and not watchin them.in the ad break if one channel changed then i completly forget what i were watchin on that channel.We have so much food but sadly we are still hungry. Spare a minute and just think what are we…..

Hi All,
I am a big lover and big fan of Doordarshan old serials. Those were awesome and very much useful for daily life and were completely message oriented.It would have been a great thing if Doordarshan repeats all the serials again as they have been already super duper hit at that time. I have grown up with only Doordarshan serials and still love the DD channel very much. No channel till today can match the DD programmes how much ever the technology has been improved.
I request the DD people to please repeat all the serials once again and surely all the people will enjoy watching.
