The year 2009 has been a cold year for bollywood. We have seen many multistarrer movies but they had failed to deliver to the expectations of the audiences. This week another hot movie entered to the big screen. Yeah, I am talking about Kurbaan. It is one of the most awaited movies of 2009. Saif Ali Khan and Kareena kapoor starrer, Kurbaan has been released this Friday. The movie had got a lot of buzz before the release, as it has real life couple on reel life, with very intimate scenes. The purpose of the movie becomes clear in first hour itself, when Islam comes into picture and its association with old custom of Jihad, revenge and bloodshed. As the movie proceeds, one interesting subject is shown. The movie indicates that Islam, like other religions, gives all emphasis on love, peace, and humanity and the purpose of Jihad is revenge from whites for their wrongdoings in Muslim Countries like Iran and Afghanistan.
The movie begins with a fast pace. Audience would have liked it for sometime as typical Hindi Movie-Love story with few onscreen kisses and backless outfits of size zero Kareena. Two catchy item songs also added the same flavour for masala loving Indian audience. Avantika (Kareena Kapoor) is a teacher at a university in Delhi. She comes back from New York where she teaches earlier, because her father (Aakash Khurana) had a heart attack. In India, she meets a Professor Ehsaan Khan (Saif Ali Khan). Soon, they begin dating each other and love blossoms between them. A few months later, Avantika receives call from her university in New York, asking her to come back. Avantika tells the news to Ehsaan. He doesn’t mind coming to the States with her. And they get married before leaving. After the marriage, they start a new life in New York, where Avantika met Salma [Nauheed Cyrusi], a neighbour, who tells Avantika about her being in grave danger. To know more, you have to see the movie.
Kurbaan has two stories running simultaneously – the love story between Saif and Kareena and the story of Islamic terrorists. The director sets the stage for the movie in the initial half an hour itself, after which there are a lot of twists in the tale every 15-20 minutes, which catches the audience completely unaware. The highpoint of the movie is the 40-minute climax, which finishes the movie with a sense of satisfaction. The culmination to the story shakes you completely, largely because it’s pragmatic and has been executed very well. And filming the climax at the various underground tube stations should have been the toughest challenge for the director. On the flip side, Kurbaan caters more to the mature, open and the thinking viewers and it might not be accepted whole-heartedly by those who enjoy only the hardcore masala movies. It is one of the most powerful and sensitive movies released this year. Also, Saif and kareena have done full justice with their roles. The dialogues, background score and cinematography are also above average.
