Rann is a serious plot and while watching Rann, it may give you a feel of RGV’s Sarkar, even though the two films are far apart. You recall Sarkar because Rann is an equally thought provoking film that portrays a world we’ve only seen only from outside. If you like Sarkar type of movies then you sure gonna find Rann a good movie. The film, directed by Ram Gopal Varma, focuses on Indian media. Before its release, the film was involved in a controversy with the title song which was inspired by India’s national anthem, Jan Gan Man. The Supreme Court banned the film’s promos and the screening of the song in the film. Finally Ram Gopal Varma replaced the song with Vande Mataram.
Vijay Malik (Amitabh Bachchan), the ethical CEO of struggling television channel India 24/7, is losing the ratings battle with a rival channel headed by Amrish Kakkar (Mohnish Behl). He does not compromise his ethics for just making money although his channel keeps sinking. Malik’s son Jai (Sudeep) comes to India and finds his father’s ethics as an oddity to this field and says that the news channel ought to be run like a business company if it has to beat the competitors, and believes in ‘creating’ news rather than reporting it.
Jay with his Brother-in-law (Rajat Kapoor) become pawns in the hands of the wily and cunning politician Mohan Pandey (Paresh Rawal) who masterminds a media-led campaign against the Prime Minister’s and frames the Prime Minister for being complicit in a terror attack. Pandey can then take over the position and Jai will have enough money to start his own channel. Believing the story is true, Malik airs it on his network. However, one of Malik’s reporters Purab Shastri (Ritesh Deshmukh) who imbibes the lofty journalistic ideals of Vijay Harshwardhan Malik, discovers the plot and tells his boss who turns everyone in, including his son.
Movie might have pit fallen, if the actors would not have performed so well and story would not have been so bounding. You will find magnificent piece of acting of each character and won’t think of suggest any other actor for the particular role. Especially Big B and Sudeep have acted so well that you would like to give them a standing ovation. Paresh Rawal, seen in an RGV film after a long, long time, is at his performance best. Rajat Kapoor is incredible. Mohnish Bahl seems to get the role of a lifetime and he sinks his teeth into it. Gul Panag is natural and so easy on the eyes. Neetu Chandra does her part very well. Suchitra Krishnamoorthy is also too good. Rajpal Yadav contributes to some funny moments the movie has. Neena Kulkarni and Simone Singh are perfect in their roles. The film’s music is by Amar Mohile, Bapi-Tutul, Sanjeev Kohli and Jayesh Gandhi, while the lyrics are by Prashant Pandey and Sarim Momin. Film songs are average.
All in all, this movie is a compelling watch for the viewers who enjoys serious cinema. You will surely be satisfied after watching the movie.
