How to improve your vocabulary?

in: Tips and Tricks

Good vocabulary is very important for one’s success in career as it helps you to use more descriptive words to better communicate your thoughts. Suppose you apply for a job, or you have to give any presentation or speech, in such cases your vocabulary will determine whether or not you’re successful. Just imagine you have a billion dollar idea, but you are not able to convince your investors because of your poor vocabulary. It also helps you to better understand information that you are reading or listening, thereby increases your retention. Good Vocabulary is indispensable for competitive examinations like CAT, GRE, GMAT, XAT etc. There are many ways to improve vocabulary.

You can improve your vocabulary by reading books, magazines, poems, plays, stories and newspaper. Always refer to dictionary for new words. The basic idea is that the more language you’re exposed to, the more new words you’ll learn. Recently, while searching for more innovative and modern ways to improve the vocabulary on internet, I came across VocabMagik.com. They have developed an innovative method to learn vocabulary, using animated cartoons and images. Each word is mapped to a related easier word, and that is also depicted in the animation. So each time you have to remember a word, you need to just recall that humorous cartoon or image. Learning new words has never been so easy.

Let us take an example. Suppose you want to learn the meaning of “Bacchanalian”. The meaning of bacchanalian is “a drunken person”. Now see in the image given below. This word has been linked to Bachchan (Amitabh Bachchan) and also poster of Sharaabi movie is shown in the cartoon. The Hindi meaning of Bacchanalian is “Sharaabi”. So whenever you encounter the word “Bacchanalian”, you can visualize this funny cartoon of Amitabh and his movie Shaarabi. Similarly all the high frequency CAT, XAT, GRE and GMAT words are linked to animated cartoons that tell you a story, and it’s the story that remains with you, helping you learn not only the definition of the word but also its usage!

You can also subscribe to the “Word of the Day” so that you can learn one new word everyday. ::
