The man who converted the world’s biggest epic Mahabharat into a TV serial is no more. Today, Mr Chopra passed away this morning at around 8:30, after a long illness. He was an Indian director and producer of Bollywood movies and television serials. His brother Yash Chopra, son Ravi Chopra and nephew Aditya Chopra are also popular and very successful directors in the Bollywood industry. He was 94 years old. Actually he was the first person who made “Chopra” a brand name in Indian film industry. Later his brother and son continued his legacy of making big super hits movies for Indian people. In 1998 he was awarded the Indian government’s highest Honor to a film personality, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award.
In 1955, he formed his own production company called ‘B R Films’. His first movie for this company was Naya Daur. It was one of the biggest hits of its era. He repeated his success with movies like Ek Hi Raasta Sadhana, Kanoon, Gumrah and Humraaz. He also helped his younger brother Yash Chopra to establish himself in bollywood. Yash Chopra gave direction to movies Dhool Ka Phool, Waqt and Ittefaq under B R Films banner. Even in 80s, he came with films like Insaf Ka Tarazu on the issue of rape, and Nikaah. His TV serial Mahabharat entered the ‘Guinness Book of World Records’ by registering 96 per cent world viewership. May God rest his soul in peace!
