India has developed the cheapest car of the world. Now its time to launch the cheapest laptop. I am not joking. India is on verge of launching only 10$ laptop. According to HRD state minister Purandeswari research work is going on in Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and IIT Madras to develop the cheapest laptop. This laptop will be used mainly by children. Actually it is India’s response to Intel 100$ laptop for children of developing nations. The laptop will be very useful in solving the problems of low computer literacy and e-learning especially in distant villages of India.
Last year Indian government rejected the offer of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) alumnus Nicholas Negroponte to supply 100$ laptops to school children of India. The government said that Indian computer engineers are able to develop laptops cheaper than that 100$ laptop.
Still I think 10$ is a big challenge for IISC and IIT engineers. I am wondering how they will cut the hardware costs and set manufacturing price below 10$.
