65 years back when Pandit Nehru addressed the nation at the historical Red Fort and became the first prime minister, not a single person, who witnessed that golden moment, would have thought that the nation would be going to be ruled by him and his relatives for the next 4 decades. Unfortunately, it happened. My gradfather saw Pandit Nehru becoming the first prime minister, my father saw the emergency under the leadership of Mrs. Indira Gandhi and anti-sikh riots and Bofors scam when Rajiv Gandhi was prime minister. Almost 40 years, the entire nation was under the control of one family, the great Gandhi family.

Threats to Freedom of Speech in India

For a nation that has close to 120 million users, of which 43 million users are on Facebook, 3.6 million on Google plus and 3.5 million on Twitter, the move to screen user content is complete nonsense. Failing in performance and good governance, the Indian government is trying to gag the voices of discontent and dissent. This is the third time in the history of post-Independence India, the Indian National Congress has attempted to seize the freedom of speech.

Nira Radia tapes controversy

Almost one year back, it was a black day for Indian journalism when Open magazine broke the story of the Radia tapes. The content of the tape was very shocking, it revealed the telephone conversations of Nira Radia with senior journalists, politicians, and corporate houses. The Indian Income Tax department, after getting approval from Home Ministry tapped Radia’s phone lines for 300 days in 2008-2009 as part of their investigations into possible money laundering, restricted financial practices, and tax evasion.

Dev Anand passes away

Dev Anand, one of the greatest Hindi Cinema actors has died because of heart attack in London. He had traveled to London for a medical check up, was not keeping well for the last few days. He was 88 years old. He started his career as an actor in 1946 in Hum Ek Hain. Ziddi which was released in 1947, was his first superhit movie. He established his film production company Navketan International Films in 1949 and produced more than 35 movies. The Government of India honoured him with the Padma Bhushan in 2001 and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2002 for his contributions towards Indian cinema. Some of his big hits were Paying Guest, Baazi, Jewel Thief, CID, Johny Mera Naam, Amir Garib, Warrant, Hare Rama Hare Krishna and Des Pardes.

She started her career as a junior actor but due to her talent and passion for cinema she became one of the most wanted heroines of the early 80s. The sobriquet “Silk” came in 1979, with her first Tamil film Vandi Chakkaram, in which she played a bar girl named Silk. In a career spanning 17 years, she did over 450 films in Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu, Kannada and Hindi languages. You might have heard old persons talking about how different things were when they were of your age. For example, it used to cost 50 paise to buy a cup of tea 20 years back, which costs 4 rupees now a days. When I started driving, the petrol price in India was 35 Rupees per litre. Now a days, one litre petrol may  cost you around 70 Rupees. That’s called inflation. You can also call it price rise. Inflation is when a certain form of currency starts  to have less value over time. The lesser value of currency causes increase in the average level of prices for goods and services. In  other words, it is an index which represents how prices of goods and services as a whole are growing.
